Starting at the Historic Village of Çavuşin
In the early morning, as the sun begins to rise over Cappadocia, Çavuşin Village stands out with its historic charm. Known in Ottoman records as “Çavuşini,” the village is one of the oldest settlements in the region. With its rock-carved churches, cave dwellings, and abandoned stone houses, Çavuşin offers a unique blend of history and nature.
As you walk through the village, you’ll see ancient cave homes, narrow streets filled with souvenir stands, and local products waiting for visitors. The village atmosphere immediately transports you back in time.
Balloons in the Sky
One of the magical moments of Çavuşin is the sight of hot air balloons rising into the sky. In the early morning hours, balloon teams prepare their flights, and the colorful balloons slowly ascend above the valleys, creating a truly unforgettable scene for hikers.
The Path Towards Ak Tepe
Leaving Çavuşin and heading towards Ak Tepe (White Hill), you’ll pass through vineyards, fairy chimneys, and scenic trails. Along the way you may encounter:
- Traditional village bread and fresh eggs,
- Old rock-cut dwellings and storage caves,
- Vineyards and orchards, reflecting Cappadocia’s agricultural life.
The trail can be steep at times, but wildflowers, butterflies, and panoramic views of the valleys will keep your spirit lifted.
Reaching the Summit
After about 7 kilometers, you’ll arrive at the summit of Ak Tepe. From here, the view is breathtaking:
- The sweeping valleys of Göreme and Avanos,
- The famous Paşa Bağları fairy chimneys,
- And in the mornings, dozens of hot air balloons drifting in the sky.
At sunrise and sunset, Ak Tepe offers some of the most magical panoramas in Cappadocia.
A Journey Through Nature and Silence
During the hike, the sound of birds, the fragrance of wildflowers, and the sight of local wildlife like foxes or partridges accompany you. You may also spot old pigeon houses, vineyard terraces, and irrigation channels that once shaped the region’s rural life.
Ending the Route
For your return, you can either circle back to Çavuşin Village or continue towards Kızılçukur (Red Valley), famous for its sunset viewpoints. Both options promise memorable landscapes and peaceful surroundings.
